Why Give?

One of the main obstacles to the success of community development projects in Nicaragua is the lack of resources. Often there are people with good ideas and the willingness to commit their time to a project that might improve the conditions in their community, but because there is no support from any local sources, the idea for the project is never realised.

Being relatively resource-rich here in Canada, we are in a very good position to help some of these projects get off the ground. One of FOGs main goals is to be an organisation that will identify and support those projects that have a greater chance of contributing to their community.

More often than not, the resource that is lacking is money. Sometimes the quantities are in the thousands of dollars, but at other times they're less than a hundred dollars. The projects that are desperate for a hundred dollars are often those that will have a larger impact in their communities (think about it). They're also the projects that tend to be ignored by larger organisations. Since FOG is also small, we hope to support the small projects as well as the larger ones.

In the year 2006 we are funding a community library project, and two scholarship programs.

Material Donations

There are other times when all that's needed for a project to work are some materials or some tools. For instance a group of people might be missing the materials and tools needed to run a carpentry workshop or a sewing school. Our field-volunteers are often able to identify these needs in the communities where they're living and based on those needs, make requests to the FOG membership base.

The following is a list of materials that have been taken to Nicaragua by our volunteers in the past:

If you have some items that you don't need and that you think may be useful in Nicaragua, please don't hesitate to contact us at slftf(at)vcn.bc.ca.
