Santa Rosa del Peñón is a small mining and farming town with a population of over ten thousand people. It's located half an hour from the nearest paved road and about three hours away from León, the nearest city. We had a volunteer presence in Santa Rosa from September 1997 till the beginning of November 1998. During this time, we contributed some materials to some of the community projects there (a photocopier, used clothing, prizes for raffles, and money for the purchase of folkloric costumes), and, through volunteers, helped several small projects there. Highlights included teaching computer classes, planting three hundred trees with some youths from the town, and building a community garden and an efficient wood-burning stove in the community-run children's nutrition project. Since then, we have provided some funds for a small community garden project, we've provided scholarships to four Santa Rosan youths and we have helped two Canadians find volunteer placements in Santa Rosa. Also, we helped provide dishes for a new Casa Materna, a new hostel for pregnant women from the rural areas to stay in. |
